Marvel Tokon Episode Mode, Explained
Five stories, one per launch team, written by comic writer Kieron Gillen. Each episode is a short campaign of fights and comic-style cutscenes that ends with the Champion — and clearing any one of them unlocks him for your roster.
What Episode Mode Is
Episode Mode is the single-player campaign, available from the main menu. The story is told through a mix of animation, comic-book panels and fights — each of the five episodes follows one team as it takes on the others, then faces the Promoter and finally the Champion. Writer Kieron Gillen (Die, Once & Future, plus Marvel work on Star Wars and Young Avengers) wrote the stories, and each episode has its own artist.
During battles you'll see optional combat missions — small objectives that grant an advantage in that fight when completed. They are worth doing on a first playthrough, because the boss gauntlet at the end of each episode does not pull punches.
The story shifts depending on which team you pick: each episode is a separate narrative with its own opponent order, so beating one team's story does not spoil the structure of the others in terms of chapter-by-chapter details.

Fighting Avengers
11 chapters · Assemble Rush damage boostThe most-documented episode and the one several guides recommend starting with: its roster is beginner-friendly and the full chapter list is published.
Unbreakable X-Men
Gauge fill boostA speed-and-mixup lineup on paper: Storm and Magik move fast while Wolverine and Danger supply the damage. The day one patch also revised Danger's ground dash so it can cancel into skills.
Amazing Guardians
Mobility boostThe mobility preset fits the roster — Spider-Man's webs and Star-Lord's flight give the team angles other lineups have to work for.
Samurai Outriders
Counter damage boostThe oddest mix in the game: two keepaway tools (Ghost Rider, Loki), Blade's range, and Deadpool's self-damaging chaos. High ceiling, high effort.
Knights of Doom
Projectile damage boostThree projectile characters plus Carnage's rushdown — a keepaway-heavy lineup on paper, and the bonus matches it.
Chapter counts: only Fighting Avengers has a fully published chapter list so far (Vandal, Aug 6, 2026), so we only state a count for it. The other four episodes exist with the same structure — we are not publishing their chapter counts until a source verifies them.
How One Episode Plays: Fighting Avengers
Vandal published the full chapter list for Fighting Avengers (11 chapters). It shows the episode formula: your team assembles one character at a time, beats the other four teams, then fights the Promoter and the Champion three times.

The first three chapters teach the tag system with a growing team; chapters 5–8 are the real fights; the final three are the Champion gauntlet. If you lose, you can lower the difficulty after a loss — that is how the trophy path clears all five episodes quickly.
How to Unlock the Champion
Clear any oneEpisode to add the Champion to your roster. You don't need all five, and multiple guides (IGN, Vandal, keengamer, screenrant) agree on this. The Champion is the final boss of every episode, so you will fight him on the way — beating him at the end of the story is what counts.
He unlocks for versus, training and online play, but stays the Episode Mode final boss — that's why the unlock condition doesn't let you bring him back into the story. In the launch meta he is a novelty pick rather than a tournament character, so treat him as a fun unlock, not a team plan.
Some guides recommend the Fighting Avengers episode specifically because its chapter list is fully documented and its roster (Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Panther) is beginner-friendly. Any episode works — pick the team you want to learn.
How Long It Takes
Producer Takeshi Yamanaka says Episode Mode holds around 10 hours of content across all five stories (as reported by IGN and Vandal). A single episode is shorter than that average implies: community estimates put one playthrough at roughly 45–90 minutes depending on whether you watch the comic cutscenes.
If your goal is the trophy path, our trophies guide estimates all five episodes at about 4 hours when you drop difficulty after losses. Those two numbers measure different things — 10 hours is the total content, 4 hours is the optimized clear — so both are true.
